“Gardening…I’m kind of learning as I’m growing. Get it?! Growing?!” -Brigid
The ground has thawed (for those of you who live in frozen tundras like Brigid and Elizabeth)and that means it’s time to get digging. For those of you destined to sweat it out all year long, the gals may be a touch jealous that winter coats aren’t in your wardrobe, but their thoughts on landscape design and the merits of straight-lined flower beds are still 100% valid, obviously. Some of Brigid’s hot tips for your yard:
- Prep, prep, and prep some more. Preparation is your best friend when it comes to setting your yard up for success. It starts with edging the beds and removing any weeds that have made their way into your yard over winter. Don’t forget to remove all of the winter debris like those pesky little leaves and old mulch. True. Yardsaver. Straight, clean lines and fresh beds are flower heaven, promise!
- Dump your money into the dirt. Read: good soil is really, truly worth it! Introduce some organic matter, some compost, and mix it in there a little bit for beautiful flowers. You can even look into adding acidity to the soil to make your hydrangea blooms come in extra colorfully. Brigid’s going to be attempting this soil alchemy and will be sure to report back. Stay tuned.
- Remove that negative energy. Prune your trees and shrubs before foliage comes in. You’ll thank Brigid and Elizabeth later for this one. Cut down those brown little stems or old blooms and your life will be so much easier later on. Let’s call this one a Spring Cleanup, shall we? Everyone loves a refresh, for real.
- Thrill, fill and spill. Add some curb appeal by planting planters. (Be sure there is drainage at the bottom or you’ll have literally drowned your beautiful flowers, and the money you poured into that luxe, top-of-the-line potting soil.) Down and dirty tip: cut down your cost(and avoid breaking your back) by putting Styrofoam, old soda cans, or water bottles at the bottom of your beautiful faux-concrete planters(after you’ve drilled a drainage hole at the bottom, natch)and then toss in the soil and flowers! Double whammy? That’s a YES! Also don’t forget Brigid and Elizabeth’s mantra for planters: you need a thrill, a fill, and a spill. Think a tall, spiky plant, a mounding flower, and a trailing vine. Perfection, but only if you make sure to clean. the. planter after you’ve potted. Don’t leave your flower pot messy! (You 100% should have read that in Moira Rose’s voice, BTW.)Also, kudos to Petitti’s Garden Center for the thrill, fill, spill mantra!
- Odds only for the beds. When you’re planting your flowers, ODD numbers only and stagger them. So much more appealing to the eye!
- The early bird may not get the worm, when it comes to mulch. Don’t put your mulch down too early. All the little things that trees drop? Yeah, not going to be fun for you later on. While it might be tempting to mulch early, no one wants to be beholden to leaf blowing those little things from their fresh beds all. the. time. (Even if mini leaf blowers are super fun for old and young alike.)The solution-black mulch. It’s often the last to arrive on the truck and so your yard will look fresher for longer!
